CHAPTER 15

Genni blew a stray hair out of her face. “This is a wild goose chase,” she grumbled.

Cooper grunted from across the room. “I have to say I’m surprised that your grandmother’s paperwork is so disorganized, considering how you describe her. She sounded like a militant-type woman, and so I would expect her records to be the same way.”

“You’d think,” Genni muttered in return. She sighed. “I suppose this is part of why I worry that Hudson’s claims are true. I mean, we know your grandfather had to bail her out once. Who’s to say she didn’t get behind again?”

“True,” Cooper said, sounding distracted.

Genni looked over to see him reading a paper. His curls were framing his face and that stubble on his jaw was growing thicker again, just the way Genni preferred it. The initial attraction she’d had for him came slamming to the forefront and it took a quick stiffening of her knees to keep herself from walking over to ask for another earth-shattering kiss.

She would never in a million years have expected that the man she was constantly at odds with would be able to kiss her in a way that gave her hope that her broken pieces could be put back together.

The feeling of comfort, protection and rightness were a totally new experience to Genni. She’d gone on dates before, she’d kissed a few men, but never had she been affected this strongly.

The thought that Cooper might be more than a passing fancy or irritating housemate simultaneously frightened and excited her. She found herself craving more of the feeling, but being terrified of what it would bring. Pursuing a relationship would mean letting him in. There’s no way we would be able to just have something casual between us, not with that type of chemistry. But can I do that? I’ve never let anyone get that close, not even the women at the flower shop. The only people who know my story are those who grew up here, and luckily they don’t talk about it. None of us do. She groaned quietly. Why was it that life was so hard?

“Find something?”

Genni snapped out of her thoughts. “Um...nope. You?”

Cooper shook his head, disgust on his face. “Not a thing.” He huffed a laugh. “Unless you count grocery store receipts from the seventies.”

“Niiice.” Genni nodded slowly. “That’s much more helpful than actual tax records.”

He laughed and pushed a hand through his enticing hair. “Maybe we need to approach this from another angle.”

Genni frowned. “What do you mean?”

“Well, we don’t even know if this guy is legit,” Cooper explained. “Maybe we should spend a little time looking him up rather than worrying about finding the records.”

“You honestly believe he’s lying?” Genni dropped her eyes to the floor. The idea that she was being conned or had been taken out by a criminal made her feel dirty somehow, like she was at fault for not recognizing the slimeball for what he was.

“Like I said before, I just think something smells fishy.
